Daymark · Source review: September 7, 2026
The U.S. added 162,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in August; unemployment held at 4.1%. Food services and drinking places added 59,000 jobs and local government education added 42,000. Information employment fell by 23,000. These figures are seasonally adjusted. [1]
BLS revised July’s payroll change from a loss of 23,000 to a gain of 21,000. June and July together were revised upward by 55,000. Initial estimates can change as additional employer reports arrive. [1]
A national payroll gain does not mean every occupation is hiring. It also cannot, by itself, tell us whether the Federal Reserve will change rates. Track the industry mix and revisions alongside inflation and other economic indicators.
