Is AI Making the First Job Harder to Find?

The early-career hiring gap is widening. What the evidence can—and cannot—tell us.

The brief

Stanford researchers using ADP payroll records through June 2026 find that employment among 22–25-year-olds in AI-exposed occupations trails a comparison path based on less-exposed peers by 19%. They do not find widespread displacement across the economy. The paper was revised August 12. [1]

What is changing

The gap mainly reflects fewer young people being hired, rather than more workers leaving. It is concentrated where AI substitutes for tasks. The comparison is a relative gap, not a claim that AI eliminated 19% of young people’s jobs. [1]

Where the evidence stops

The authors describe these as early indicators, not causal estimates. Some differences predate generative AI, controlling for education weakens the patterns, and the ADP sample shows larger effects than national survey benchmarks. [1]

Why the first rung matters

Daymark’s analysis: a slower route into work could affect how people acquire experience even if established workers remain employed. The question to follow is whether employers create new paths for beginners as their tools change. Future coverage should compare hiring, training and progression—not just layoff announcements.
